Foods to Avoid on GLP-1 Medications

Some meals cause a lot more trouble than others on Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound. Here is what to go easy on, and why.

Why certain foods trigger nausea and bloating on GLP-1 medications

Some meals leave you feeling sick while others barely register, and it comes down to your stomach, not the meal itself. GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound slow down how fast your stomach empties, an effect confirmed by a clinical review of GLP-1 medications and gastric emptying. Foods that are naturally slow to digest on their own, like fat, add even more time on top of that. Raw fibrous vegetables and carbonated drinks bring their own trouble too. Research on fermentable carbohydrates and gut gas production shows why these foods tend to cause bloating even outside of a GLP-1 medication.

You do not have to memorize a long list of rules. A few categories cause most of the trouble.

Foods to go easy on

  • Fried food. Fried food is full of fat. Fat makes your stomach empty slower, so food sits there longer and can make you feel sick.
  • Heavy cream sauces. These are also full of fat. Your stomach has to work harder and longer to move them along.
  • Tough meat like steak. Tough meat is hard to break down. It stays in your stomach a long time and can cause pain or nausea.
  • Raw broccoli, cauliflower, or cabbage. These make extra gas in your gut. When your gut is already moving slowly, that gas builds up and causes bloating.
  • Carbonated drinks. The bubbles add extra gas on top of a stomach that is already slow to empty. That combination can leave you feeling uncomfortably full.
  • Large meals. A big plate of food takes a long time to clear a slower stomach. Smaller meals give your stomach less to manage at once.

What to do instead

Choose foods that are soft, cooked, and lower in fat. Our guide to foods that are easy to digest has a full list of protein and vegetables that tend to sit well.

When to call your doctor

Ongoing nausea or bloating is worth mentioning at your next appointment, even if it does not feel serious. Severe stomach pain, vomiting that will not stop, or not being able to keep food or water down are a different matter. Those need a call today, not a wait and see.
